Selfish Society

We live in a selfish society

On my way in to work this morning I heard the most interesting broadcast about American society and its selfishness. It appears that people have finally realized that Americans are selfish! The reason they realize this is because people are now refusing to have children. They don’t want the responsibility; they don’t want to grow up. People like their lifestyles and they don’t want to change because of little kids.
The best part was when the leader of the show declared that people don’t want to think that the cost of college is about $200000 and how will that effect retirement funds! This made me think of the Jewish way of life! We send children to private schools where the cost before college will equal way above $200000 more closely for one child it will be close to $400000 before they enter college years. So if the goyim are complaining about children and going off to college and how that affects their funds, how should we feel about all this?
I think this is like some people thinking that NY is the only place in America that Jews can exist. They have no idea how other people do it. Same as goyim they have no idea how other people do it. Whereas people, sending their kids to private schools have a real good idea how one can survive all of this.

Thoughts?

It might be nice if you would refrain from referring to non-Jews as "goyim." It is rather low class and bigoted.

Every generation has a curse. I've heard more than one rav saythat our time's curse is selfishness.
Think of this, for example. For 1850 years or so, Jewish fervently prayed for God to return us to Zion and rebuild our land. Chanted it three times a day, 5 if you count Chazaras haShatz.
Then, in 1948, it became possible. In 1967 it became even more possible and since the 1990's it's even been economically attractive for some.
So why are just over half the world's Jews still in Golus? Could it be the comfort? The English vs Hebrew? The bigger homes and backyards? The safety vs the constant threat of war?
But still we pray three times a day to go home.

CJG-

You can't expect everyone to agree with everything you post. Terms like goyim are either artifacts of cultural ignorant or down right hateful. No thoughtful person would use them!

CJG, don't worry about negative replies. It's a good sign that people are reading and talking about you.

The name "Jewgirl" doesn't always sound nice. Yet the author chose it for herself.

1) I hate selfish people. I remember it being the defining characteristics of all the girls who were mean as children. It is much worse now - because my compatriots are their parents.
2) on "Goyim"; I think you are using it in the literal meaning - "nations". ie, those of other nations.
As much as I love reading what you write - you poke problems in the eye so neatly - I recall the words like "goyim" reflective of the selfish society you are right now frustrated with. Mostly because I've babysat for women who would say "don't worry about the dishes, the goyta will do them. " "We don't want to call you Janina, because that's the goyta's name" (turns out, I have the name of a middle aged polish woman...)
ON the other hand - we are so selfish, we forget that we are STILL not really in a safe place. Goyim as an insult used to reflect the fear and distaste in which we lived when surrounded by truly unfriendly people.
